Meet Jan van Eyck

Meet Jan van Eyck

Jan van Eyck was the most famous and innovative painter of the 15th century in Northern Europe. He was from the Netherlands.

His mastery of oil paint and incredible attention to detail is really an amazing thing to see. There are only 20 surviving paintings of his that are confidently identified as being created by him.

He lived from around 1390-1441.

This week you should have 3 Fine Art Pages featuring works by Jan van Eyck on display.

Today we have two short videos. The first that introduces us to van Eyck, and the second treats us to a short discussion about the painting shared above, Portrait of a Man in a Red Turban, which is thought to be a self-portrait. Very interesting!

*Parents please be aware of some nudity in the first video at 1:02-1:08

Time: 6 minutes

P.S. On Friday, our video will show a simple art project you can do to wrap up your week of learning about Jan van Eyck! For this project you need: watercolors, paint brushes, permanent markers, water in jar, paper towels, and hair dryer.
